Blog Tour: Dangerous Denial by Amy Ray

Author: Amy Ray
Publisher: Barking Rain Press
Date of publication: April 2014

Denying the past proves deadly for BK Hartshaw and Trevor Mayhew in this gripping noir novel where nothing is as it seems.

BK is a rising star at a public relations firm, and tonight’s charity ball should be a high point in her career. But a closely guarded secret threatens to destroy her chance for happiness with the only man she’s ever loved… a man who is also hiding a deadly secret.

Trevor has tried to put the past behind him, pretending it never happened. But the conniving father he’s been running from for years has finally found him—and is determined to settle the score once and for all.
BK and Trevor’s deeply buried secrets are about to catch up with them—and everyone they know and love. Who will pay the ultimate price for their dangerous denials?

Dangerous Denial was a pretty quick read.  I was able to read through it in an afternoon.  I thought that the synopsis made it sound like a good concept, but the book fell a little short for me.  The story follows BK and Trevor through their childhoods into adulthood.  The two stories didn't seem fit together until almost the end of the book.  The level of suspense that was supposed to be building just never got there for me. Maybe had there been less background in the beginning and more of the present with flashbacks, it might have worked better. I did feel pretty bad for both characters as they had pretty harsh childhoods. Their past did shape who they became as adults.

It's kind of a hard book to review because of the plot twists late in the book.  Talking about them kind of gives too much away.  But, both were pretty easy to call ahead of time since there is a lot of foreshadowing. The other thing that I didn't like was all of the time jumps in order to progress the story. I felt like I was just settling in when the book would jump ahead in time.  Then I felt like I was playing catch up.  For instance, BK and Max are happily dating and then in the next chapter they are suddenly breaking up, but I wasn't sure why.  I had to go back to see if I missed something.

This the debut book by the author.  I think it has a lot of great potential but it just didn't work for me.  I have read some great reviews, so I do suggest you give it a try for yourself.
